» Feature Writer Lisa Nichols - Have you ever had a bad claims experience?

A pending "Good Faith Insurance" bill will amend current insurance laws, making insurance companies responsible for damages caused by intentional refusals or payment delays to policyholders. Minor wrongdoings can quickly add up to big insurance bad faith lawsuits.

Have you ever had a bad claims experience? What happened? Did you receive poor service? Or did you clash with the insurance company over the claims settlement amount?

Hi Lisa,

I was out of work for 6 months while the Worker's Comp folks battled with my insurance carrier over who should pay for wrist surgery. Rather than allow me to get the surgery and return to work, (which I desperately wanted to do!) and hash out the payment later, they made me wait while they sent me to 5 different specialists and subpoened my entire medical history, including an exhaustive background of my mental stability.

I'm so sorry that you suffered through that experience. It sounds harrowing. Hindsight is everything, and it's easy for me to comment, not having lived the nightmare like you did. But for what it's worth, if you found yourself in a similar situation (and I pray that you never do), I'd file a complaint with your state board of insurance, and, I'd go to the local news, too. Almost every TV station has an "on your side" newscaster, who acts on behalf of the consumer, and they'd be all over a case like yours. Barring that, I'd send an open letter to the local newspaper and cc the insurance carrier CEO and the PR manager. You'd be surprised at how quickly people will move when public relations becomes involved! I hope you are doing much better today, and that the delays didn't result in further damage to your wrist. Best, Lisa

p.s. Melissa, I love reading your articles. They're so timely, funny and true. Did you see the bad boss piece in People last week? At least you never had to rub anyone's feet!
